Kenny Galvin was one of the nicest guys you’d ever want to meet. Give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. But, when he drank the Irish came out and not in a good way.

After 6-8-10-12 drinks Kenny would get this crazy look in his eyes. That look meant that Kenny was about to pick a fight with the biggest guy in the bar. Not just the biggest guy, the the biggest guy with the two or three biggest friends. Size and numbers didn’t matter to Kenny. And then we’d get our asses kicked and limp home licking our wounds.

So I’m out drinking one fall evening when who walks in to the bar–Enter Kenny Galvin of the Boston Galvins. He had already had 2-4-6 drinks somewhere else and as soon as he saw me he wanted to drink with me. Being polite I bought a round and the he reciprocated and so on and so on until that crazy look started to appear.

Kenny I said, I have to go and meet a young lady for a DATE, where he in turn said , well i tag along, where I said no Kenny this is a DATE. He wasn’t catching on so I told him no again reiterating that this was a DATE. Where in he said he’d come along and I of course said no, This is a DATE. Needless to say he tagged along and half way up the the block on my way to the DATE he starts to get belligerent with me and started a fight with me. As in the meeting of Kenny I mentioned his stature and I pretty much just fended of his punches until he was fit to be tied. Right about the this small group of 6-8 young kids gathered to egg old Kenny on amd halway through a punch intended for my he stopped half way through and punched one of the little kids egging him on right in the face and a real fight was on. Kenny and I against the eight kids.

The melee ended as quick as it started when I threw one of them through the store front window and the alarm went of. Like little cockroaches the scattered leaving us to fend for ourselves. A half a block and we were safe in the dugout of Martin’s Tavern on the corner of Wisconsin and N street n.w. We hid out there for almost half an hour until the police quieted down and when I thought it was safe I said I’m going to meet my lady friend for our DATE where in Kenny Said I tagalong
