McSorley’s Ale House

McSorley’s is a beer bar in Manhattan New York. I don’t know when it was opened, but I do know it was a long time ago. My first trip there was in 1978 while visiting a friend. Phil and I got there aroud 2:30 pm. It was still slow as the after-work crowd was still a few hours out.

All of the history is unknown to me, but it is extensive. Rhey make their own beer at their own brewery in upstate somewhere. When you order beers you order two at a time. One beer is $1.50 but two beers are $2.00, so you order them two at a time.

Around four it starts to get busy with the businessmen’s trade. All of a sudden the bar was full–standing room only–three deep at the bar. After drinking several beers I had to go to the loo(bathroom). They had the nicest urinals I’ve ever seen. They stood about seven feet tall and you could almost stand right in it. So, as I’m there staring at this great urinal while relieving myself I hear the door open, I look and in walks a young lady. She walks right past me, staring I’m sue, and goes right into a stall.

I finish my business and head back to the bar where I ask Phil about the gal in the restroom. And this is what he told me. In 1974 the New York Supreme court ruled that they had to allow women into the bar. The court never mentioned anything about building women a restroom. So, in 1974 the first women were allowed into McSorley’s. Can you believe that, no women allowed in until 1974.
