While out drinking with my buddy Phil we had a stellar idea. Let’s go golfing in Myrtle Beach SC. Where this idea came from I don’t know but it sounded good at the time. It sounded even better the next morning when I brought it up to my girlfriend. She actually encouraged me to go. I started making phone calls to resorts that very day. Finding out that if you booked after April 15th the rates went down drastically. Phil and I called two friends in New York City and ran the idea past them and they agreed, it was a great idea.
A little bit of plot thickener later and we had tee times, two rooms, and two flights to Sunny South Carolina. Greg and Ralph were flying down in the morning and Phil and I about an hour later from D.C. meeting at the airport in Myrtle Beach. Picking up our rented Cadillac we were off for our first nine holes. Many days and many rounds of golf went bye and a great time was had by all. Great golf and great memories.
Getting back to work ay Martin’s Tavern in Georgetown and the old grind I rhapsodized about the fun and golf. Two of my regular golfers over heard me and inquired about the costs and the travel workings. They seemed interested so I told them about the golf planner I set the trip up with and they said that April 16th was the perfect time for them to take a golfing trip. They were both tax accountants and the 15th was their cut off day. I assumed the cost would be the same for 8 of us and said I’d get back to them in a few days. The cost was same same for 8 people but when you got to nine people the tenth one was free.
I called Carl and John to tell them about the accommodations, tee times, and the costs when much to my surprise John told me they had twelve friends lined up and were searching for more as we talked. 12 and 4 was 16 and that meant one free golfer, or, 25% off for the four of us. Now I could bore you you with tales of daring-do golf exploits but I won’t. We all had a great time and upon returnining to D.C. we started planning the next years trip.
This time they had 28 golfers. This meant that we all got 50% off our trip. 1/2 off was way better than 25% and our foursome was the belle of the ball. We bought drinks for everyone and even picked up a few dinner bills along the way. Who knew golfing could be this much fun? Carl and John were connected to this group of tax attorneys, CPAs, and accountants. Their group kept growing and outgrew our foursome. The fourth and last year for Ralph, Greg, Phil, and me was even bigger. John and Carl had 36 golfers this year and that meant FREE GOLF. I’ll cut to the chase, at the end of the trip I told John about the free golfer thing. He happily agreed to take over the group and take the free golf for his foursome. My group just quietly disappeared.
