After 9:00 and four miles to the docks, what to do. Another shot of that gold flaked vodka and a little brainstorming. It was decided that we would stay at a friends house and be taken to the return boat in the morning. Half an hour later a man showed up at the restaurant. Can’t recall his name or his wife’s, all I remember was we had to give him the equivalent of ten bucks for the night and the ride. Also, he said not to mention the money to anyone. As we walked the three blocks to his house my girlfriend was kinda talking real loud and somehow we attracted the local constabulary’s attention. In their kitchen meeting his wife there was a knock at the door. In comes the two policemen. One about 24 years old and the other about 44 years old, the younger one spoke English fairly well. As I was explaining our situation our friend spoke to the older policeman. Our stories jibed pretty well ,but my girlfriend being a bit drunk was yelling and screaming at the cops. Nasty thing like we’re American citizens and things like that. So after a few minutes of her screaming they all stopped speaking English and off to the hooscow we went. All the way with her shouting “we’re Americans, you can’t do this to us. Once at the police station, ascene out of car 54 awaited. An older policeman sitting in a big chair in front a a raised desk, with us handcuffed to a bar on the wall, her still screaming We’re Americans and the older man getting madder and madder. At on point the younger policeman tells me she better shut up or it could get really bad for us. So I turn and say Julie “SHUT UP” and she does. as calmer heads prevail, it’s decided that we will spend the night in jail and be driven to the boat in the morning and set back to Finland. Quiet ensued and coffe was brought to us about 6:00 am. some kind of roll with butter also. A short ride to the docks, and, were they ever glad to get rid of us
p.s. she didn’t speak to me for two days
